I have a checklist \u2013 what I look for:<\/h3>\n

Location, location, location<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Is it near public transport (if using)
\n\u2022 Or, is there parking nearby \u2013 what is the cost of parking, is it likely you can find a space if a public car park
\n\u2022 Is there a bar or a coffee shop nearby
\n\u2022 Where is the local tourist office (mainly to get a map, or look for other useful local information)
\n\u2022 Local shop \u2013 maybe a bottle of water or some headache pills
\n\u2022 How far to walk to restaurants \u2013 check out reviews and make a list of where you think you would like to eat (you can check the menus online or better, when you arrive \u2013 pop-in and have a look, maybe have a drink so you can assess the ambience and book a table if necessary)
\n\u2022 Is there something I can see nearby (perhaps I don\u2019t feel like going far, or weather not great). Look at museums, shops, views, something of interest to me
\n\u2022 ATM \u2013 always useful and cheaper than changing money in hotel[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Hotel<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Wifi \u2013 in rooms as well as public areas
\n\u2022 Reception, public spaces with chairs (sometimes it\u2019s good just to sit and think, watch the world go by)
\n\u2022 Coffee shop or bar \u2013 check the times it is open
\n\u2022 Restaurant (in case I don\u2019t want to go out)
\n\u2022 Pictures of the bedrooms
\n\u2022 Facilities in the rooms (many hotels now list the facilities)
\n\u2022 Bathroom \u2013 shower or bath as required
\n\u2022 Is there a lift (up 3 flights of stairs is not great for my partner)
\n\u2022 Comfortable chairs, small table
\n\u2022 TV, radio \u2013 any cable channels likely in other languages
\n\u2022 Coffee machine, kettle (if not, take travel kettle)
\n\u2022 If large hotel, do any travel\/tours deliver you to\/from hotel (some do, check the tour site, such as hop-on\/hop-off bus)
\n\u2022 Is there a shuttle bus to airport or somewhere else you want to go
\n\u2022 Secure place to leave your luggage on day you are leaving (if late travel)
\n\u2022 Late check out possible (sometimes free, sometimes low cost)
\n\u2022 Reviews \u2013 check hotel\u2019s own site as well as TripAdvisor
\n\u2022 Booking.com \u2013 many hotels are on this site. Read the details, reviews, look at the images \u2013 often more than on hotel\u2019s own website<\/p>\n

Apartment or other self-catering<\/h3>\n

\u2022 Wifi
\n\u2022 Is there a plan of the accommodation \u2013 much easier to see the layout of the space
\n\u2022 Look at the images of all the rooms, lots of information available in photographs
\n\u2022 Linen, towels provided?
\n\u2022 Charge for cleaning?
\n\u2022 Security\/breakage deposit? Is there an inventory?
\n\u2022 Garden\/outdoor space\/balcony \u2013 any furniture? Any photograph of the view (or is the view just a general one of the area)
\n\u2022 Refrigerator \u2013 freezer as well?
\n\u2022 Hob \u2013 how many rings? (How many do you need)
\n\u2022 Is there an oven? A microwave?
\n\u2022 Do I think that proper pans and other cooking utensils are provided \u2013 don\u2019t plan to cook anything too complicated
\n\u2022 Tea towel\/cleaning cloths (or take)
\n\u2022 Dishwasher (take DW tablets, not worth buying a box)
\n\u2022 Where is the nearest shop\/supermarket? Do they actually sell things to make a meal, or just a few tins
\n\u2022 Bath\/shower \u2013 is there constant hot water?
\n\u2022 Bath\/shower \u2013 is a non-slip map or grip provided? It\u2019s easy to take a small non-slip map rolled in your suitcase, better than falling
\n\u2022 Table and chairs
\n\u2022 Comfortable chairs \u2013 I prefer an upright chair, so if there are dining chairs I am ok
\n\u2022 TV\/radio\u2013 any cable channels likely in other languages
\n\u2022 Secure place to leave your luggage on day you are leaving (if late travel) \u2013 this is often hard with self-catering accommodation
\n\u2022 Late check out possible? (sometimes free, sometimes low cost)
\n\u2022 Reviews \u2013 check apartment own site as well as TripAdvisor
\n\u2022 Booking.com \u2013 many apartments are on this site. Read the details, reviews, look at the images \u2013 often more than on owner\u2019s own website.
